Harmony the last show of the year at Tay River Gallery promises the art lover, connoisseur, and collector a " feast for the eyes" with paintings of every size and description displayed from Nov. 20th to Dec. 31 on the theme of harmony.

Yes, our gallery will be brimming with art in every nook and cranny. Featured artists for the Harmony Show will include Anne Barkley, Margaret Chwialkowska, Jean Gauvreau, J.G. Morin, Deborah Saulnier, Fortunee Shugar, John Stevenson, J. Allison Robichaud, Vivien Tytor, Rivka Waas, and Tricia Wilmot Savoie.

As well we have an ongoing exhibition of works by John Alexander Day, Mary Nunn, Bill Veale, France Tremblay, Heather Assaf, Karen Phillips Curran, Shirley Mancino, Martha Markowsky, Normand Baril, Deborah Czernecky, James E. Pay, Antal Serences, Gudrun Schutz, Mary Schofield, Sylvia Summers-Martyn, and Andrew Olscher. Don't ask how I make it all fit as I never know until the last painting is hung whether I actually will manage it and we do have four lovely sized exhibit rooms for paintings. What would I ever do with a"grand gallery space" like those I hold a twinge of envy for - ( Rouge Gallery for one) and other marvelous grand sized galleries ? I have my hands full with TRG thank you very much.

As usual the excitement builds, as well as a teeny bit of apprehension in the days prior to the mounting of the show, and prior to the hours of backbreaking labour to make it all come together. I really have got to get more help, I squeek frantically as the deadline approaches!

The art will make the walls sing regardless of my attempts at orchestration, because there is so much beauty to behold in the upcoming show. The art will speak for itself most eloquently.
Parting words of your humble gallery curator, Lisa Brown, just a few days before the show opening.

The Tattler is the Gallery newsletter with information about the featured shows and upcoming events. More pictures of John Day's new paintings are posted on our Featured Artists Page for John Alexander Day as well as on the online store.

The fall is a wonderful time to take a day trip to Perth and stop in to see the art show at the gallery and also see the sights in the area.

One new addition to Perth's growing list of attractions in the past year is the new Myriad Cinema in the Old Perth Shoe Factory Building at 1 Sherbrooke St. Every last Sunday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m, a selection of short independent films from the Spiritual Cinema Series are featured, sponsored and run by Lanark Hills Foundation. The only charge is a $2 donation, plus the cost of hot buttered popcorn or drinks you may want to indulge in.
They have been described as "Two hours of inspiring entertainment, that will warm your heart and stir your soul - in hard-to-find movies you are unlikely to see anywhere else".

Last Sunday was my first opportunity to go to the movies and my husband Dave and I enjoyed watching them together and were both thoroughly impressed. What a wonderful selection of short films! The films from the Spiritual Cinema Series are short films from around the world by independent film makers and deliver a wonderful story with tasteful production that is thoroughly entertaining , engaging and heartwarming... all in a matter of 10 to 20 or so minutes. The entire program lasts two hours with 4 to 5 short films included.
Check out the Movies Page on the Myriad Centre for the Arts Website for the next series of movies which will run on November 25th or call Jim Deacove at 613-267-4819 for more information.

From the rural countryside to the urban landscape, I try to capture the light and atmosphere and their effects at different times of the day. J. Allison Robichaud Exhibition September 2007

"In art, one does not aim for simplicity; one achieves it unintentionally as one gets closer to the real meaning of things." Constantin Brancusi, Romanian sculptor,1926.

J. Allison Robichaud takes simplicity to the sublime with his masterly brushwork in new paintings on exhibition this month at Tay River Gallery.

Robichaud’s distinct painting style has a quiet elegance and ethereal quality to it that is an integration of poetic atmosphere and painting technique. Subtle progressions in texture and layered tone in the paintings are comparable to the movements in a classical concerto. Treatment of light, and atmosphere with cloud formation and wind effects hold the viewer captive spellbound in the skilfully rendered 'moment in time'. Landscapes, pastoral and wilderness, as well as still life florals capture fleeting beauty, and engage the viewer’s attention with harmonious colour, delicacy and poignancy in presentation.

These are not paintings meant for quick study. These contemplative, harmonious compositions beckon a quiet mind to perceive the subtle nuances as the viewer experiences a scene in Robichaud’s world on canvas. The evocative aspects of nature portrayed reveal this plein air painter’s strong connection with the spirit of nature. Robichaud depicts the natural world as a harmonious, peaceful and beautiful place, a 'place of truth' and his paintings are truly the works of a virtuoso in tune with his environment.

Internationally known and highly respected landscape painter J Allison Robichaud of Prescott is an elected member of the Institute of Figurative Arts. He is a "plein air" painter, who works outdoors on location to paint his landscapes. He has demonstrated a life-long passion for his art with a span of over 30 years painting. He has taken part in twenty four solo and numerous group exhibitions in Ontario and Quebec, working exhibitions and Canada's most prestigious art symposiums. He was included in International Artist's magazine feature "Master Painters of the World - Canada" in June 2004. Mr. Robichaud is also author of the book, The Reflective Stepping Stones of a Painter, published in 2002.
Allison Robichaud is exhibiting in a solo show at Tay River Gallery, Perth until September 30, 2007. The vernissage will be held on Saturday September 8th from 2 to 4 p.m. at 28 Wilson St. West in Perth.

Summer Splash

Summer Splash, our summer - long fine art extravaganza at Tay River Gallery opened on July 4th with "summer fresh" works from 28 regional artists. A wide selection of original art in terms of style, subject matter and media is displayed all summer guaranteed to provide some splash to your summer whether you come to simply browse and visit or decide you must own one of one of these high quality original Canadian artworks.

Plan to set aside some time this summer to see this show with its abundance of summer seascapes/landscapes, florals, figurative and abstract works painted by our regional artists. If not at Tay River Gallery, then perhaps visit a gallery located near you. These talented Canadian artists are most certainly deserving of our recognition, respect and support. Art enriches the soul as we are witness in a brief glance and connection with the essence of another human soul through the medium of the artist's creation.

We encourage and welcome parents to bring your children out to the exhibit as well. We firmly believe that the early appreciation of art and creativity in all the arts are important to quality of life. Fine art exhibitions are generally free events and provide enjoyment to young and old without barriers. We take our children to movies, arcades, museums, zoos and amusement parks. Why not art galleries? Let's make a point of passing on this reverance and appreciation to our young people so that our cultural life remains rich for many generations to come.

"Awakening" to be held April 16 in Ottawa on Parliament Hill : Re the contributions of the arts to our nation.

I received an email from artengine today today about an event that will be held on April 16th on Parliament Hill organized by the Writers'Union. I think the agenda deserves as much attention and participation by artists as possible so I am reprinting their release in my blog for your information and to encourage participation in the event.

"The Writers’ Union of Canada is holding an Awakening in Ottawa, on April 16, and
your voice is important. Come and help us “awaken” the Harper government to the
cultural and economic contribution the arts make to Canada.

We believe that our nation's cultural health depends upon the constant flow and
consumption of art and artistic ideas. The Arts, like our lakes and rivers, are a
vital natural resource that can be too easily neglected.

The Arts tell us who we are. The Arts tell the world that Canada is more than
Mounties and maple syrup … The Arts boost our economy.

Writers and filmmakers and playwrights and visual artists and musicians and dancers
and performing artists are holding a press conference in the Charles Lynch pressroom
on Parliament Hill at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 16, 2007. After the press conference,
Canadian Artist from all disciplines will gather in front of Center Block for the
Awakening event.

Ask everyone you know to come to Ottawa with us. And let us know if you will attend
the Awakening by e-mail to info@writersunion.ca

Artist News Item

John Topelko was in the news in the past week as well. John has donated bronze relief artworks originally commissioned by A.Y. Jackson years ago, to an Ottawa park in Manotick and a school named after the famous painter. The CBC interviewed Ottawa artist, John Topelko last week.
From CBC News online. Friday March 23,2007.
"Ottawa artist donates portraits commissioned by A. Y. Jackson" .
"Two portraits of A.Y. Jackson commissioned by the famous painter decades ago will soon be on public display in Ottawa after a 50-year journey into existence and a subsequent struggle to find a home."
See full story covered by the CBC online at the following link:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2007/03/23/ayjackson-070323.html

Another news tidbit while still on the topic of John Topelko. Topelko has taken on the task of teaching art to residents at the Royal Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa once weekly on Saturdays. This recreational art program is a new initiative created by John as he was surprised to find there was no program of its kind in place for the residents.
Bravo John! Let's hope other artists will follow his lead and pitch in to contribute some time to this worthwhile program.

John Topelko's oil paintings can be seen year round displayed in Tay River Gallery in Perth, Ontario.

Artist News Item

Gallery artist, Karen Phillips Curran was in the news this week in an article posted in the Bermuda Sun on March 23, 2007. The article recounts an interesting story of the artist's first trip to Bermuda in 1987 and how Bermuda became a reference point for Curran's work and forever changed the direction of her art.
Works by Karen Phillips Curran can be seen on display at Tay River Gallery in Perth, Canada.
The article is reprinted below with permission from Bermuda Sun.
3/23/2007 12:10:00 PM
'Bermuda's the reference point for all my work'
Twenty years ago Karen Phillips-Curran was a struggling artist in Ottawa. Today, one of her full-sheet watercolours can cost you up to $1,500.

Ms Phillips-Curran looks back over two decades of painting and at one moment in 1987 that she says forever changed the direction of her art - coming to Bermuda.

Inspired by a book she was reading which encouraged young artists to travel, Ms Phillips-Curran decided to visit Bermuda in the hope of finding her muse. There was only one problem - she was broke.

After several weeks of careful negotiating, she persuaded some close friends to fund her trip to Bermuda. Ten friends paid $100 each and, in return, they asked that she paint them each a different portrait of the island.

"What happened then, in hindsight, was a pivotal moment. It manipulated the whole direction of my art" Ms Phillips-Curran explained.

Inspired by the landscape, colours and traditional architecture of the island's buildings, she says that her trip to Bermuda was when she really 'came into her own' artistically.

Her long-time friend and fellow-artist, Emma Ingham Dounouk, a Bermuda resident, first met Ms Phillips-Curran on that pioneering trip in 1987 and says that she has been amazed at the transformation of her friend's work ever since that first visit.

Ms Dounock said: "There is something magnetic about the colours for her here in Bermuda. The shapes, the textures, how one line breaks over the other, her eye has become so well-trained to the nuances that are so distinctly Bermuda."

The trip put her artwork on the walls of the Windjammer Gallery - where she's been showing for 17 years. Her paintings could also be seen in the 'Pretty in Pink' exhibition which recently showed in Dockyard. She now paints all over the world. Last spring she set down her easel to paint the churches of Venice, the mountains of Sicily and the olive-orchards of Greece, but says her mind was always somewhere else:

"Bermuda's my reference point for all my artwork. I see Bermuda everywhere."

Her greatest career hurdle came two years ago when she was diagnosed with cancer of the iris. She was devastated at first and noticed it was beginning to affect her work. Despite radiation surgery the tumour still remains in her eye. But she remains optimistic and still runs her own business in Ottawa called Ferrytale Studio. And, on the side, she helps paint the sets at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, which she has been doing for ten years.

She has more plans to travel overseas but says she always knows there is a place for her in Bermuda.

News Update at Tay River Gallery

Only two weeks left to catch the art show, Passions of the Heart. It's definitely worth a visit! The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 - 5 during March.

Welcome back Shirley!
Shirley Mancino has just returned from her 3 1/2 month trip to Thailand and Myanmar. Shirley's work will be featured in a solo show in June. We can't wait to see her dramatic new inspirations.

We welcome Mary Schofield, Perth area artist formerly of Montreal to the gallery this month. A group of Mary's oil paintings of flower arrangements are currently on exhibit. These works are exemplary of her unique style of palette knife rendered, texturized works using a bold colour palette.

Our spring art show Blooms opens April 1st and features the floral paintings by four dynamic artists: Leah Dockrill, Bill Keast, Andrew Neil Olscher and Gilda Pontbriand. The Reception for Blooms will be held mid-show, on Saturday April 28th from 2 - 4 p.m during the Festival of the Maples in Perth. The show runs until May 3oth.

Leah Dockrill, Toronto area artist, is an elected member of both the Society of Canadian Artists (since 2000) and the Ontario based Colour and Form Society (2007). She has participated in many juried, group and invitational exhibitions since 1997 and a solo show in 1998. Leah 's acrylic florals presented in this show are realistic renderings demonstrating her technical brilliance and the poignant physical beauty of her subject matter.

Bill Keast, Belleville area artist and former art teacher exhibited rural landscapes in acrylics in the winter exhibit, Snow Defines at Tay River Gallery. In Blooms Bill brings an exciting mix of florals, up close and personal in his unique style using the "cloisonné technique" of outlining forms. The artist finds his inspiration for these works in his own backyard garden paradise.

Andrew Neil Olscher, Lakefield area professional artist brings his version of blooms in bold thickly textured acrylic paintings of vivid flowers in mass. His free flowing style of impressionistic floral images provide a dynamic presentation of colour and texture. Over the past fourteen years his work has been exhibited in a variety of group shows and purchased by private and corporate collectors and galleries locally and internationally.

Gilda Pontbriand, Ottawa area artist studied art in Mexico, Canada and France and has had over 75 solo and group shows in Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico and the United States. She has won twelve national and international awards for her work in oil, acrylics and mixed media. Gilda's soulful images " travel between the mundane and a magical world without making the illusion of reality its main objective".

Spring is in the air and the blossoms at Tay River Gallery beckon.
